W.H. Smith Memorial School, in collaboration with the OISCA team, celebrated World Earth Day 2025 with great enthusiasm, deep awareness, and a sense of shared responsibility. The theme for this year, “Our Power, Our Planet,” focused on the urgent need to accelerate the shift to renewable energy and take collective action against climate change. Earth Day, celebrated globally on April 22nd, was first observed in 1970 and is now also recognized by the United Nations as International Mother Earth Day through its Harmony with Nature initiative. The Earth Day presentation was witnessed by classes 5 to 12 that highlighted key environmental issues such as climate change, ocean pollution, deforestation, and the loss of biodiversity. Students learned about the serious impact of rising global temperatures, melting ice caps, extreme weather conditions, and threats to ecosystems and wildlife. The session emphasized the importance of sustainable practices, including the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), tree plantation, water and electricity conservation, and the use of eco-friendly products. Special focus was given to India’s contribution towards sustainability, showcasing government initiatives like the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) and various energy missions aimed at promoting renewable resources. Students were encouraged to take simple yet impactful actions such as avoiding single-use plastics, cycling or using public transport, and spreading awareness in their communities. To instill environmental consciousness from an early age, Classes 2 and 3 participated in a fun and thoughtful activity. A vibrant soft board was set up with two sides—Thumbs Up for actions that help the Earth, and Thumbs Down for actions that harm it. Students picked slips describing different habits (e.g., “planting a tree” or “littering in public”) and had to decide where to place them. This interactive game not only engaged students but also sparked discussions on how everyday choices affect our planet. The Primary Section hosted additional hands-on activities such as drawing, planting saplings, and storytelling sessions related to nature and sustainability. These experiences helped our young learners understand that small actions can lead to big changes when done together. The day concluded with a collective pledge to protect the planet, echoing the powerful message: “One Earth, One Chance – Let’s protect it together.” Let us all continue working hand in hand to create a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable world for generations to come.
